Rolls-Royce has marked the start of a new era with the unveiling of the all-electric Spectre.

In an interview with Autocar, Torsten Muller-Ötvos, CEO of the British carmaker, stated that by the start of the next decade, the production of electric vehicles would be the only option. This means that, aside from models being updated, the brand’s famous V-12 engines will no longer be in production.

The executive predicted to a British publication that by 2030, no more V12 engines will be available and that all new Rolls-Royces will be electric.

At the end of 2023, the first Spectre will be presented, which they consider to be the most significant Rolls-Royce since their introduction of the 10hp in 1904. This model showcases how electric power is ideal for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars and marks the start of their electric transformation. By 2030, Rolls-Royce will be a fully electric company.

Despite the likelihood that Rolls-Royce’s future may involve electric power, the company is still dedicated to the V-12 for the time being. Muller-Ötvos told Autocar that Rolls-Royce will still keep investing in this engine to meet new standards. This means that until 2030, the V-12 will still be seen in models such as the Phantom, Ghost, and Cullinan SUV. Two of those models are set to be renewed at some point during the decade. Additionally, the 12-cylinder could potentially be featured in special, “very limited-run” models like the Boat Tail.

The executive also re-asserted that the automaker will not be making any hybrids, and will instead move from the V-12 powertrains straight to all-electric ones. This is the exact opposite of what its closest rival, Bentley, did in 2019 when they started selling a hybrid version of their Bentayga SUV.

The year 2020 was a record-breaking one for Rolls-Royce, which sold over 6,000 vehicles with each having an average price exceeding $500,000 for the first time ever. This is a testament to the success of CEO Torsten Muller-Ötvos and the Spectre, which has been met with higher-than-anticipated demand and is thus having its production increased.
