The exhibition What We Talking About by Jammie Holmes will be on display at Marianne Boesky Gallery from September 8 to October 8.
Although Holmes didn’t even go to a museum until he was in his 30s, he has become a promising artist to watch for his intimate compositions that describe his childhood in the Deep South, from visiting the park to play dice and gathering around the kitchen table to more violent situations such as racial confrontations and police encounters.
Despite employing chiaroscuro and memento mori, two Old Master devices, from Caravaggio, in his paintings, Holmes asks how one can connect with Old Master art when the word master is so strongly connected to American racism.
Marianne Boesky Gallery will feature What We Talking About from September 8 to October 8.
