London-based designer Bianca Saunders made a strong statement in fashion with her Fall/Winter 2023 collection showcased at London Fashion Week. The collection blended traditional menswear with contemporary design elements, creating a unique and bold aesthetic.
The collection titled ‘PLAYWORK’ was inspired by the popular Jamaican sketch show, “Oliver at Large.” Known as the “King of Comedy,” Oliver Samuels’ quick-witted one-liners and slapstick expression in the show is adored by audiences. Saunders was drawn to the show’s humble settings, such as stripped-back bars, bedrooms, and corner shops, which she used as inspiration for her collection. The designer was able to take these modest settings and, through her use of design elements, transformed them into something greater, much like how Oliver’s performance transforms the setting in the show.
Saunders’ use of classic tailoring techniques was evident in the collection, with a focus on clean lines and sharp silhouettes. However, she also incorporated modern elements such as oversized proportions and unexpected color combinations. The collection featured a mix of neutral tones, such as beige and gray, as well as bold colors like orange and yellow.
One of the standout elements of the collection was Saunders’ use of texture and layering. The designer incorporated a range of materials, including wool, leather, and denim, which added depth and dimension to the pieces. The collection also featured oversized outerwear, such as trench coats and parkas, which were paired with tailored trousers and shirts.
